Quick Cleanup After a Storm

8/22/2022 (Permalink)

Don't Wait When A Storm Strikes

In the aftermath of a flood or storm,, there is a high potential for mold to accumulate. There are many risks associated with flooding in a home. Mold is dependent on moisture in order to grow, so it is of great importance to dry your home and furniture immediately. The time window is short and immediate action is needed: all items and the property itself must be completely dried within the first 24-48 hours. Each item in the home MUST be completely dried in order to ensure there is no potential for mold growth.

The clean-up process includes removing standing water and anything containing water. Afterward, there must be a prolonged drying period. This means removing water from every cabinet and drawer, wiping down all objects and surfaces. Due to the difficulty of this cleaning and drying process, it is often necessary to hire a professional like SERVPRO. Doing so will allow for the property to be salvaged, for the least amount of damage.

Let us also add that unless a first responder or a SERVPRO professional tells you that it is safe, do not re-enter the building after it has been flooded! Cleaning should also wait until after your contact your insurance company and take photos of your items. If it is safe to go inside, be sure to go with personal protective equipment.

Fire Damage in Staten Island

Fire Damage?

Fires whether small or huge can be devastating when it starts at your home. More hidden damages can be done to your home than you can imagine if a small fire engulfs your home. The ugly site of soot and smoke is left visible most of the times. Both of this signs can be an indication of much more on the inside than what is seen on the surface. Smoke is dangerous to homeowners since it can slip into structural crannies and nooks and penetrate the area while leaving behind undetected odor and damage. During a fire, heat and smoke rise to migrate to cooler areas away from the fire and may permeate even areas of the home that may be thought to be undamaged. The smoke might as well wind around plumbing systems through gaps around pipes to move from one floor to another.

The various types of smoke debris that result to hidden damage include:

  • Residue from proteins
  • Residue from wet smoke
  • Residue from fire extinguisher
  • Residue from dry smoke

Most of these residues are difficult to clean but not to us. At SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island, we bring exquisite cleaning and restoration services to both residential and commercial clients. Our restoration technicians are highly trained and are equipped with advanced equipment. We also provide round the clock emergency services to your convenience.

Dealing With a Puffback

1/24/2022 (Permalink)

You had a puff back in your Staten Island home, now what?

A puff normally occurs when an oil burner doesn't ignite immediately, causing oil fumes to build up before ignition, resulting in an explosion similar to the backfiring of a car. This can also occur from a lack of maintenance, a buildup of debris can also create an excessive explosion upon ignition. In either case, it will spray soot and debris through the furnace or boiler's exhaust system all through your home/property… creating a serious mess

If you have a forced air system the problem will be worse, the heating ducts spread soot into every corner of your home in a fine layer that seems impossible to remove, this occurs the same way the vents spread heat.  A puff back can be a serious problem, with each ignition sending varying amounts of soot, it makes its way into heating vents, ceilings, carpets, baseboards, etc. Or sometimes is a single sudden event that shoots out a large amount of soot into the heating system causing just as much of a mess.

What Should You Do Now?

It is quite problematic how much area soot can cover, it goes everywhere, and into places you wouldn't expect. It can even force you out of your home in bad cases. This soot is not just a powdery substance, but it is also black and sticky because it is a mixture of oil and debris that becomes difficult to clean without proper equipment. This dirty residue must to be cleaned as soon as possible or staining and odor can become much worse. In addition to the debris the soot leaves behind, a puff back will create an odor that will seep through your home.  So, what should you do now?

Assess the situation and the amount of damage that was done

  • Wash all affected clothing and fabrics in the house - some may require professional dry cleaning
  • Throw away all exposed food
  • Call a repairman to fix the malfunctioning oil furnace
  • Call a cleaning service to take care of the soot and chemicals
    • And that's where you need a puffback specialist to thoroughly clean and deodorize all affected items and SERVPRO is available 24/7 to assist!

Proper Fire Alarm Disposal and replacements

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

Why you need to dispose of your fire alarms the right way-

Smoke detectors using an ionization chamber contain small amounts of radiation that are safe in your home, but when they are thrown away can cause harm to the environment. Smoke detectors that are not properly discarded and are thrown into the trash or burned will release their radioactive material into the environment, making proper disposal is very important.

When to replace them and how-

The average life expectancy of an ionization smoke detector is 10 years, after this the sensors begin to lose their sensitivity. If you check the back, you can find the manufacturing date of your smoke detector. Once you have checked the back, you can replace the smoke alarm with a new one if you find that it is more than 10 years old or the test button does not work.

You can return your old or unneeded smoke detector to the original manufacturer for disposal as hazardous waste, or if you have a recycling center near you in Staten Island that handles these materials, bring them there. The brand name and/or address can be found on the back of the device, online or in the user’s manual. After removing the battery and recycling those properly, return the entire unit intact with a note indicating that the device is intended for disposal. Detectors should be mailed by ground mail so they are not on an airplane.

Christmas Tree Fire Safety!

Fire Fact sheet Christmas Tree Fire Facts

Play it safe this Christmas season

It was found that between 2015 and 2019, United States fire departments responded to an average 160 home fires that started from Christmas trees per year. And from that these fires caused an average of two deaths, 12 injuries and $10 million in direct property damage annually. You definitely do not want to add to those numbers this year. At SERVPRO we do fire cleanups and restorations frequently, seeing the toll it can have is the reason we want to share some advice to stay safe this winter.

Here are some tips we have below:

  • Get a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.
  • Cut 2" from the base of the trunk before placing it down.
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators or lights.
  • Add water to the tree stand daily so it does not dry out.
  • Use lights that are listed by a qualified testing laboratory. Don't use anything that gets warm.
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to sleep.

Prepare for the Next Thunderstorm

11/3/2021 (Permalink)

Knowledge is extremely powerful to have when disaster strikes.  Having a plan in place can keep you and your family safe from harm.

Here our some tips from the American Red Cross concerning Thunderstorms:

Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms produce hail with a diameter of at least 1 inch or wind gusts of at least 58 mph. Lightning produced by thunderstorms kill more people each year than tornadoes or hurricanes. Widespread power outages caused by high winds which damage homes, blow down trees and utility poles. Flash flooding can be caused by heavy rains during thunderstorms.

What’s the Difference? Storm Watch vs. Storm Warning

A severe storm watch is when there is a possibility for severe thunderstorms in and near the watch area. It is advised to remain informed and ready to act in the event of a severe thunderstorm warning is issued.

A severe thunderstorm warning is when there has been reports of severe weather by spotters or radar. Warnings indicate an imminent danger to life and property.

People are seriously injured or killed by severe thunderstorms every year despite advance warning. While some may not be informed on such warnings, there are those who hear the warning but do not heed to it; therefore, it is vital to stay engaged and have a plan in place in the event of a severe thunderstorm and if evacuation is necessary. The information in this section, combined with timely watches and warnings about severe weather, may help save lives.

For more information about storms please visit the National Weather Service.

Water Leaks

10/28/2021 (Permalink)

There are two kinds of of water leak cases that homeowners may run into that can cause them damage to the structure of the home or cost them a pretty penny. Sometimes both! The first is a disastrous situation like a burst pipe, toilet line bursting, appliance hoses breaking, etc. These leaks can cause incredible damage and are often the image of water restoration.

The other case is when, we have a situation where a faucet or other water line is left unattended and left to flood. This is a result of human error that can result in as much damage as an uncontrollable event, such as a flood, storm, or burst pipe. Wasteful water leaks can have results as minor as paying more money in your water bill each month to causing severe damage to your home and paying for water restoration. It is estimated that up to 6 billion dollars and 1 trillion gallons of water are wasted each year due to leaks. If your water bills are significantly higher than usual, you should call a professional to make sure that there are no leaks causing the rise in your utility bill.

Dishwasher Disaster

10/26/2021 (Permalink)

You come home to find your kitchen floor covered in soapy water, leaking out into the surrounding area- Now what?

The first and most important step is making sure the power is off in that area, especially the power to the dishwasher. Once this is done you can start to inspect the cause of the flooding. We recommend opening it up and checking the bottom of the dishwasher for any debris that are blocking proper drainage. This is normally the cause and should help drain some of the water still in the dishwasher. Regardless, it is time to call in the professionals for the cleanup.

SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is there any time or day for a disaster like this. We will be there promptly to assess the issue, extract the water, dry the space, and complete any necessary restorations. We are a company you can trust, with a long history of results.

10 Reasons to Get Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Professional carpet cleaning is often overlooked but really should not be ignored. At SERVPRO this is one of our first specialty services and something we are truly the pros at. Your office deserves to be clean, not only for the aesthetic but the health of your employees and yourself. Below are 10 good reasons to give us a call and get your carpets cleaned.

  1. Prolongs the life of carpeting. Regular carpet cleaning using the extraction method can increase the life of carpets significantly, protecting your floor covering investment.
  2. Protects indoor air quality. Carpets trap airborne pollutants; however, eventually, those pollutants must be removed in order to protect the carpet and maintain indoor air quality.
  3. Makes carpets easier to maintain. Most carpet soiling is made up of dry soils; when carpets are kept thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis, most dry soils can be removed with regular vacuuming.
  4. Removes spots and stains. As with other soils, spots and stains can attract more soiling. Removing them promptly protects carpeting from damage.
  5. Prevents buildup of allergens and bacteria. Moist soiling of carpets can result in the buildup of several unhealthy contaminants.
  6. Enhances the appearance of any room. Clean, well-maintained carpets speak volumes about the overall cleanliness of a home or facility.
  7. Improves worker morale. Workers feel better about their work environment when it is clean. This includes the carpeting.
  8. Makes carpeting look and feel clean and fresh.
  9. Removes dust mites and bedbugs that may have found a home in carpets.
  10. Maintains the carpet’s warranty. Most carpet warranties require that carpets be cleaned using the extraction method within a specific amount of time, usually every 12 to 18 months.

These are just a few of the reasons to get your carpets cleaned, and if this hasn't convinced you give us a call today.

Keeping Gutters Clean For Rain

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Your gutters are a great line of defense to prevent water buildup and put water where it should go, but if they are clogged this is not going to work so well. Clogged gutters can lead to leaks, floods, and bad water damages you don't want to deal with. Here are some tips to follow to prevent damage and larger issues.

Remove debris: Twigs, leaves, granules and other stuff can accumulate in your gutters, especially if you don't have leaf guards in place. Always make sure to check and remove all possible obstructions inside your gutters to minimize the chances of clogging and overflowing. Make sure to use the most adequate equipment while doing so.

Check for leaks: If your gutters have seen a few downpours, the best thing you can do is make sure they haven't suffered any damage, and that the seams are properly sealed. The best way to detect this problem is to hose your gutters and inspect every foot of your gutters to look for leaks. If you do find them, don't worry and apply a layer of sealant to solve the problem.

Make sure your downspout isn't clogged: This is really, really important. A clogged downspout is not only one of the main reasons rain gutters overflow, but they are also difficult to detect. To achieve this, hose down your downspout from the top and check that water is flowing freely at the bottom. If this is not the case, use a plumber's snake to get rid of the obstruction.

Flooding- What Next?

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

Few moments in life are as overwhelming as discovering that your Staten Island home has been flooded. Your home is supposed to be safe and sacred, and when a natural disaster, a leaky pipe, or a hole in a roof causes water to come into your home you can be left wondering what to do.

  • The first thing that you need to do is take a deep breath and get your mind focused on the task at hand. Even though damage has been done if you are okay and your home is still standing there is hope. You need to make sure that you are in the right frame of mind.
  • The second thing that you need to do is to make sure that your home is safe to reenter. If water is high enough to touch electrical outlets then the power must be turned off by you or the power company (when in doubt call the electric company before proceeding).
  • The third task is to take pictures and lots of them. These pictures will play a huge role in helping your insurance company understand the extent of the damage so that you can be reimbursed. Then any standing water should be removed from the home. Fans (if you are able to use them) brooms, and a variety of other tools can be used to do this. However this is best handled by professionals.

It can be overwhelming to know what to remove and what can be saved. Consider calling SERVPRO. We can help determine what can be kept and what needs to be removed as well as work to ensure that all moisture is removed from the home so that you can start restoration without having to worry about hidden mold. While it may be tempting to try to walk through this process alone, a service remediation company like SERVPRO can help save you money in the long run as well as give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your home in good hands.

If you’re dealing with anything other than a large incursion, you understandably may be considering handling the cleanup and drying yourself to save money or time. The problem with doing it yourself is that cleaning up and recovering from water damage isn’t always as straightforward as it seems.

Which is why we have highlighted 3 key things you need to be aware of when addressing water damage from a minor clean water incursion or Category 1 water loss.

1) Know What You’re Dealing With
Water damage can be caused by three different types of water, including:

I. Clean water (Category 1)

II. Gray water (Category 2)

III. Black water (Category 3)

It’s important to understand the differences between all three categories because Category 2 and Category 3 water will present health risks to your employees, customers and loved ones. All three categories need to be handled differently.

The most common sources of clean water damage typically occur from a pipe, water heater, steam lines or even rainwater. The basic rule of thumb is that it should look and smell like tap water. Recovering from Category 2 or Category 3 water damage or heavy flooding involves additional considerations.

A Category 2 water loss, aka “grey water” refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological, or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when exposed or consumed. This type of water damage carries microorganisms and nutrients of microorganisms. Category 3 water loss involves water that is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic, or other harmful agents. Such water may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances.

2) Make Sure You Investigate All of the Damage

The challenging thing about recovering from water damage from something like a broken pipe or rainwater incursion is that you can typically only see a small part of the actual damage. The majority of the moisture is often hidden in walls, and it’s critical to identify and dry all of the affected areas to prevent a different issue, mold. The methods for dealing with damage to walls depend on the type of materials and what’s behind those materials. Drywall can often be salvaged, when you respond quickly to said damage.

SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan uses moisture meters that allow us to assess structural integrity. If the integrity checks out, then our drying approach will depend on wall contents. If the wall has insulation, we will use flood cuts. If there is no insulation, then usually the best method is to create access holes. And if you’re dealing with a firewall, we will use staggered cuts. We may even need to remove your base molding and flooring materials. If your floors are carpet, we may be able to pull back the wet area and dry it using a fan.

3) Establish Proper Airflow and Keep the Windows Closed When Drying

Once moisture is discovered, your first instinct may be to open windows to help with the drying process. However, it may not be your best move. For example, if your building is mechanically ventilated, the systems need constant pressure levels to work correctly. You also want to avoid excess coolness or heat and humidity, or you may end up complicating the drying process.

Once we’ve pulled away wet materials and established holes or cuts in the wall as needed, we will begin placing our drying equipment. To prevent mold, make sure all the layers and materials are dry before putting everything back together.

The Big Dry Out

If you’ve experienced water damage, hopefully you’re dealing with clean water and a small area. No matter what type of water damage you’re dealing with, don’t hesitate to call us.

8/21/2021 (Permalink)

Tropical storm Henri is evolving into a hurricane that will slam the Northeast, high speed winds, flooding, and heavy rain are expected. It is important you and your family stay safe and prepared, below are some tips on how to do so:

How to Prepare for Tropical Storm Henri-

  • Be informed- make sure you are receiving alerts, warnings, and public safety information before, during, and after emergencies.
  • Learn if you live in a hurricane evacuation zone- if you do, make a plan to evacuate
  • Learn whether your property is in a flood-prone or high-risk area via the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) flood maps.
  • Create and commit to memory your family emergency plan and discuss it with them.
  • Assemble an emergency kit with what you will need such as food, water, medication, and communication.
  • Prepare for possible power outages and blocked streets.
  • Take photos or videos of your personal property and store these records in a safe place.
  • Prepare your home with temporary plywood covers to protect windows and sliding doors if possible.

Create a Plan-

  • Pick more than one safe place in your home where you can go if there is an emergency.
  • Pick two ways to get out in case you have to leave, and keep these exits clear.
  • Pick a place for your family to meet in case you are separated -- one in and one outside your neighborhood.
  • Pick a place where you can stay in case you must evacuate your home.
  • Make a plan to keep your pets safe if there is an emergency.
  • Know how to turn off the electricity, gas and water in your home.
  • Take photos of possessions inside and outside your home in case you need them for insurance purposes.

Once it's over?

Once a hurricane is underway, the experts urge people to avoid driving and stay indoors. Flooding and damaging winds can make traveling extremely dangerous. Nearly 90% of all hurricane-related deaths involve water, according to the National Weather Service.

If you must travel, experts warn not to walk or drive through flowing water. Six inches of swiftly moving water can knock you off of your feet and cars can be swept away in just two feet of moving water. Stay safe and stay informed, SERVPRO will be there for you after the storm.

How to Prevent Damage to your home

8/5/2021 (Permalink)

Fallen trees When trees fall, know who to call

Storms are as unexpected as the damage they bring. However, with the right preparation, much of the storm damage can be circumvented or averted altogether. Here are some tips below to help avoid the damages future storms may carry. When disaster strikes let us be the ones you call.

Clean Your Gutters

As it rains, and your gutters are clogged from a lack of cleaning, overflow will run down into your home. Often, this water will remain undetected and sit pooled up. Over time, mold growth occurs in these areas that have remained moist. Cleaning your gutters and ensuring they are sturdy before the rain comes can minimize the damage a storm may cause.

Landscaping and drainage

Depending on the land your home was built on, water runoff after any amount of rain can accumulate around your foundation, in turn causing a flood in your home. Fortunately, there are solutions with specialized landscaping. Better pathways can be made for water runoff, guiding the water away from your home. If you notice puddles or water accumulation near your home when it rains, contact a professional to help, before a storm comes. This will make a difference in whether your home is damaged or not.

Damaged or Dead Trees

Severe damage often occurs when a tree or limbs break off and topples onto or even into a home. Snow and rain can weigh down trees, while wind causes them to bend. If this happens to trees and limbs that are dead or damaged, there’s a high chance that they will break. Before the storm season comes, be sure to trim your trees, and remove all dead limbs.

Let Us Clean Your Vents

7/31/2021 (Permalink)

Clean Green Air

If you choose to clean your air duct system and use improper tools or don't fully clean it, you can worsen the condition of your air quality rather than improve it. At SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island, we’ve developed a targeted approach to clean air vents and systems – only using the highest-rated equipment and environmentally friendly cleansers to safely, yet effectively, purify your air ducts the right way.

As a result, you will note a marked improvement in air quality. Cleaning your air vents is safeguarding the health of your occupants. In addition, our team of air duct cleaning specialists will assess the condition of your venting system if you believe there are any pre-existing conditions (such as mildew, mold growth, etc.) and assist in eradicating the issue.

Healtheir?

The air you breathe inside is definitely not cleaner than the fresh air you breathe outside. Indoor air is around 2-5 times more polluted than fresh outdoor air. Unlike in the outdoors, your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system builds up contaminants inside of them. Not only do these trigger allergies and other health effects, but it causes your energy costs to increase as the system uses more power to function.

Our goal is to contain the work areas, ensuring minimal disruption to your business operations. After the air duct cleaning is complete, we conduct a final inspection and provide you with our final report.

Mold in your bathroom

7/16/2021 (Permalink)

Mold and Mildew

What is the difference between the two? Mildew is the beginning of mold colonization, and your bathroom is the perfect place for it to start. Moisture from your shower is a constant source for the mold to grow in the dark corners, behind and under areas in your bathroom. As the mold spreads it only gets worse unless properly treated and stopped so it does not occur again.

Risks?

Mold can cause health effects for people with allergies and respiratory conditions. Health effects relating to mold being present can be solved by completely removing the mold from your home. If you suspect black mold, stachybotrys, it can pose health effects and experts recommend calling in a professional for removal and inspection.

Prevention

It is important to always run your fan while showering and ensure it is properly ventilating the bathroom. Using a humidifier to control humidity is helpful if the issue cannot be resolved with the bathroom exhaust fan. Checking pipes behind the toilet and under the sink frequently is also crucial to ensure mold does not have a source to grow. If you are worried, give SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island a call and we will send a crew to inspect and treat the issue for you. Proper mold remediation results in not only removal but future prevention.

How to Deal With a Grease Fire

7/9/2021 (Permalink)

Dangerous?

The answer is extremely… if you don’t know how to handle the situation. Over 160,000 house fires occur from cooking annually and largely due to grease being ignited. Grease fires cannot be put out with water and the addition of water will only cause a dangerous spread of the flames, a common mistake that leads to more damage.

What to do-

  1. First turn off the heat source to prevent further ignition
  2. Attempt to smother the flame with a lid or baking sheet- do not touch until cool to touch
    1. Baking soda will work on small fires
  3. Use a Class B fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames as a last resort
  4. Know when to leave the area and call help if the fire cannot be extinguished
    1. Remove your family and pets and close the door
    2. Call 911

What not to do-

  1. Try to extinguish with water, this will only cause the fire to spread
  2. Move the pan outdoors or away from the area, this can lead to additional spreading
  3. Use flour or baking powder to smother the flame, this can make the fire much worse
  4. Use a rag to smother the flames, this can add fuel to the fire

What next-

Once the fire has been extinguished, grease fires can leave a mess and damages behind to be cleaned up. However do not fear, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is ready to assist you 24/7 in the clean up with our experts. We will remove the odors and visible damage and have your home looking "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO FIRE SERVPRO FIRE TIPS

January, February and March are peak months for home fire deaths.  During winter months, heating equipment is the leading cause of home fires.  About two-thirds of home heating fire deaths are caused by portable or fixed space heaters.  Candles are responsible for a growing percentage of home fires.

Test smoke alarms at least once a month.  Two of every five fires occur because of space heaters.  Do not place space heaters or other heating equipment near flammable materials, such as furniture, clothing, mattresses or bedding.  If you own a wood stove, always keep the doors closed.  If you own a fireplace, use a screen, and have your chimney inspected regularly.  A buildup of creosote can quickly lead to a deadly fire.

We specialize in fire restoration.  We have a 24-hour emergency service. The sooner we arrive, the better the chance we can reduce damage and save money.  We are available 24 hours a day seven days a week.  365 days a year.  Contact SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island if you have any questions and or concerns, we will be happy to assist you.  SERVPRO is a Franchise System with over 40 years of leadership in fire and water cleanup and restoration.  Our track record of results has earned us the trust of one unforgettable instance, even the Pentagon.

Preparing For A Storm: Apartment Edition

11/11/2020 (Permalink)

storm in NYC Stay safe and protect yourself during any storm!

In New York City, there is a misconception that large storms cannot have an affect on major cities (for whatever reason), and that any building as large as an apartment complex is too big for a severe storm to do real damage too.

The number of thunderstorms is much larger than the number of urban areas across the United States, showing that direct hits DO occur more often than you might think.

Below, we have compiled some notes on what you should do to prepare for a storm, from the safety of your apartment.

  • Keep canned and pantry-safe food and drinks on hand.
  • Have access to flashlights with an extra set of batteries.
  • Make sure you keep a first aid kit available: bandages, ibuprofen, and other essentials are must-haves.
  • Keep in touch with your loved ones, singling out an emergency contact to call to verify your safety.
  • Pay attention to all relatives with special needs, small children and pets, as they are the most vulnerable.
  • Find out what emergency plans are in place in your community and how you will be notified in the event of an emergency.
  • Know the hurricane risks in your area and learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area.
  • Store away your important documents (insurance policies, medical records, bank account numbers, and social security cards) Also have cash, checkbook, credit cards readily available.

An apartment building is as safe as its construction in consideration of the strength of the storm hitting it. And remember, the best place to go in your apartment building during a storm is an interior room on the lowest floor you have access to. It's important to stay away from windows during a storm, due to the risk of broken glass from severe winds.

Looking for a team to help you with cleanup after the storm? SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is here for you! Give us a call at (718) 979-4100 to have a team sent out to you as soon as possible.

How to Prepare Your Home For Winter Storms

11/5/2020 (Permalink)

Winter Storms? SERVPRO is here for you! Is your home ready for winter storms?

Winter weather brings freezing temperatures, and snowy conditions.  Ensure your home or business is prepared by reading the tips below:

1) Drain water from the swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines.

2) Be careful with Anti-Freeze: Do NOT put antifreeze in these lines unless directed:  antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, and wildlife.

3) Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain.  Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.

4) Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl space.  Ensure that areas where water supply lines are located are insulated enough.  Consider leaving kitchen and bathroom sink cabinet doors open and dripping over night if you think they risk being frozen.

5) Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes.

6) If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home set to a temperature no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.  Temporarily suspend the use of lower night time thermostat temperatures to lower the risk of frozen pipes.

If your home or business ends up sustaining damage from winter weather, call SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island 718-979-4100.  We can help you get your property restored to preloss condition.  Call us as soon as you see storm damage.

Nothing Scarier Than Broken Pipes

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

frozen pipes Frozen pipes? Burst Pipes? Give us a call at 718-979-4100!

Are you hearing a drip, drip, drip? As the weather gets colder, many residents experience frozen pipes. While freezing temperatures are a few months off, it's important to know what to possible expect. If you happen to encounter a leak in your house, it could be due to a variety of factors:

  • An improperly connected appliance.
  • Clogged Drain
  • Broken sink, bathtub, toilet, washing machine, or dishwasher.
  • A clog in a drain.

What you might not be thinking about? The very real possibility of a broken pipe. A broken pipe can an enormous amount of damage to your home. In particular, the most amount of damage occurs when you don't know where the break is or if you don't have direct access to the water break.

Broken pipes occur for a variety of reasons: freezing, corrosion, water pressure.

Freezing

With colder weather, extreme temperatures can cause pipes to expand and break. Once the ice melts, the water can flood your home. It's important to note that pipes can freeze when they are exposed to temperatures below 28 degrees Fahrenheit. In particular, the pipes that are most prone to freezing are found in unfinished basements and in attics during the colder months.

Corrosion

Older pipes break down with age, and require a trained professional in order to replace pipes. If ignored, it can cause an enormous amount of flooding. It's best to have a professional like SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island to come inspect your pipes if they are older and may need replacing.

Water Pressure

High pressure can cause the pipes in your home to break. Water is transported from a water company supply line to the house, needing to pass through a pressure regulator. If the regulator is faulty, it can cause the water pressure to rise exponentially. If the pressure gets high enough it can lead to a pipe breaking in your home.

The Bottom Line

SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is an expert in resolving water damage. If a pipe breaks, we are there to help you clean up the flooding and dry out your home. Our Project Managers and technicians are able to help you locate the source of the leaking, to clean up the water damage, and make sure that there is no moisture left in your surfaces. If a broken pipe ever happens to you, make sure that you give us a call at (718) 979-4100

My Pipes Are Frozen- What Do I Do Now?

10/28/2020 (Permalink)

burst pipes Colder Weather = High Risk of Burst or Frozen Pipes. Are you ready for what to do next?

Ah, Frozen Pipes.

One of the costliest and most destructive problems for homes, happens during the colder seasons: Pipes that freeze, and then burst. Due to extremely cold temperatures, pipes become frozen, and can burst. Don't be surprised this winter. Take charge by being prepared on how to prevent frozen pipes in your apartments or house. Knowing what to do when temperatures take a sharp dive can help you avoid the expensive and messy results.

What Causes Frozen Pipes?

  1. A quick drop in the temperature
  2. Poor insulation around pipes
  3. The thermostat set too low to heat the air in the home

Why does my pipe burst after it's frozen?

When water freezes, it expands. Inside the pipe, if there is too much expansion in one area, there is too much stress on the pipe which causes it to burst. It doesn't matter if it's plastic or metal. Pipes that freeze can burst and leak water everywhere, causing massive damage. Think about how expensive it would be to replace all of your flooring, having to toss out furniture or rugs, or having to remodel a kitchen/bathroom/basement due to water damage from a burst pipe. Many don't think that frozen pipes will happen to them, only to be surprised when they face a giant leak.

Pipes that are most susceptible to freezing are ones located nearest the severe cold, like those in unheated areas like a basement, attic, garage, kitchen cabinet or even pipes that run through exterior walls with poor insulation. On a cold day and colder nights, these are the pipes that are most likely to freeze, burst and cause thousands of dollars in damage.

The Good News

There is action you can take to prevent frozen pipes from happening to you.

  1. Make sure to remove and drain water from all outdoor hoses and sprinkler supply units this Fall or as soon as you can during the Winter.
  2. Identify and Insulate all pipes that are in areas of your home that are not heated, like the garage or basement. You can buy pipe sleeves to apply on the exterior of your pipes at most hardware stores.
  3. Insulate your property. Not only will you stop your pipes from freezing, but you can also lower your heating bills substantially.

If you are experiencing a frozen pipe, let us know by calling SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island at (718)979-4100. We will be able to thaw out your pipe safely and prevent any floods from occurring.

If your pipes do break and result in flooding, our crews will be there in order to clean up the water and remediate damage. Remember: water damage is time sensitive. The sooner you call, the better your chances of saving your property and not having to replace your items and flooring.

Common Questions About Storm Damage

9/18/2020 (Permalink)

Aftermath of a Storm Ever wondered what to do in the aftermath of a storm? You're not alone!

When confronted with a natural disaster, it’s important to prepare for the aftermath of the storm. Extreme, tempestuous weather can cause major damage to your home. As trusted restoration professionals, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is ready to answer your questions about how to deal with storm damage.

What Type of Damage Can I Expect?

Each storm and disaster is different in it’s severity and scope. There is no real way to predict the impact of a storm on a home. The most common types of damage include water damage and structural damage to the home, from flooding or fallen debris on the home. The heavy wind that often comes from storms can break windows or pull doors off the hinges. When a door or window is blown away, it allows for water to enter the home, causing severe damage that requires water restoration.

What Do I Do Now That the Storm is Over?

You must react quickly if your home has suffered any type of damage after a storm has subsided. The first step is to locate a contractor who provides restoration services. Your home is susceptible to further structural damage, mold, and more if you do not act quickly and have an expert restore the damage quickly. If any windows and/or doors have been removed, be sure to put them back in place or find a suitable solution until you can properly replace the units.

Roof Damage? Restoration Professionals will put a tarp on a broken roof to ensure that the property is safe. Keep in mind: you will also need to contact your insurance provider to start the claims process. Take plenty of pictures of the area to aid your claim.

What Happens During Restoration?

The process of restoration is unique to different situations, Storm Damage Restoration being no different. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island uses professional-grade equipment to quickly remove any excess water and effectively dry out the area. If applicable, our professionals will use further steps to get rid of unwanted odors and sanitize the space. Our professionals will remove damaged drywall, re-install flooring, clean all surfaces, and perform any other needed tasks to ensure that the home is back to its original state.

Storms can be debilitating to homes which is why it is important to pick a reputable cleanup and restoration company. Be sure to put your home in safe hands, with the help of the team at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island. Give us a call at (718) 979-4100.

Water Remediation Defined

9/11/2020 (Permalink)

Ahhh, water damage.

When you walk into a flooded basement, it's hard to imagine if, or how, it will ever get cleaned up. Thousands of gallons of water, soaked walls, and the furniture is floating. It's a scary sight, a prospect that nobody forsees happening to them.

But, what is water remediation?

Water Remediation is defined as the act of remedying, or fixing, a situation. It is the act of treating or reversing damage created by a surplus of water. Treatment involves cleaning, drying, sanitizing, and repairing any structural damage left in the wake of the water.

The Cleanup Process

There are three key steps must be completed in order to finish the remediation process.

The first step is to remove all standing water from the property. Also part of this process is dehumidifying the area. This will eliminate all water vapor and moisture in the walls and floors, to avoid mold or structural damage. We call this step the dehumidification process.

Next, we move on to cleaning and disinfecting. Why? When the water is gone, professionals are left to clean all of the sewage water, toxins, chemicals, and contaminants that have been left behind. In order to restore the home back to its original condition, it must be cleaned and sanitized.

The final step? The last step in the remediation process is to both repair and restore the impacted property. This translates to replacing any parts of the home that were damaged heavily (think cabinets or flooring that cannot be salvaged) in order to restore the home to its original condition.

Next up, it's time to DRY

As stated above, water remediation begins by removing of all standing water. Once the source of the water has stopped, whether it's a leak that has been blocked or rain having subsided. It's advised that you call a professional like SERVPRO to handle damage of this caliber. Drying your walls and floors is a task for the experts, as a typical home wet/dry vaccuum cannot handle the large amounts of water. At SERVPRO, we use professional level extractors, sub-floor drying systems, air movers, and the highest quality blowers and dryers to remove all of the water.

In order to make sure there is little chance of mold growth, we then take extra measures to remove any water vapor. Any moisture must be removed immediately to avoid any other hazardous sanitary issues.

Don’t Forget the Soap

After the water is removed entirely from the effected area, it's important to SANITIZE. Why? Water damage is often grouped into three categories. These include white water, gray water, and black water, all referring to the level of pollutants in the water.

White water refers to common water damage, which may be caused by an overflowing sink or tub. This is the easiest type of water to clean and sanitize. Gray and black water, however, can be hazardous to all those exposed to it. The reason being that gray and black water leave behind a slew of toxins, chemicals, sewage, bacteria, and other disgusting particles.

Not to fear though. Our professional cleaning supplies, machinery and industrial cleaners, will make certain that your home is clean and sanitized.

A Stitch in Time

The final step of water remediation is the restoration of the damaged property. When water damage occurs, left untreated, it has the ability to warp or damage ceilings, floors, and walls. There are three options to fix this damage, affected areas must be repaired, replaced, or restored. No matter how quickly a restoration company like SERVPRO comes along, it's often necessary to throw out items like carpet or rugs that have taken in too much water and are not salvageable.

Five Must Know Tips for Preparing For Storms and Floods

9/8/2020 (Permalink)

Flood in NYC streets from Storm Storms can wreak havoc on your home (and your sanity!) Preparing today can save you peace of mind and money down the line.

From appliances mishaps to natural disasters, water damage has many types and forms that accompany it. Storms and floods are one of the most common types of water damage homeowners and renters can expect here in New York City:

According to New York City Emergency Management, floods account for over $1 billion dollars of damage each year in the United States. It is a threat that every New Yorker is exposed to, regardless of proximity to the waterfront. Flooding can arise from storms, water main breaking, or sewage backups.

  1. Make an Emergency Readiness Plan

It is recommended to make an Emergency Readiness Plan to be ready for any situation. This includes knowing where to meet family after an emergency, there should be at least two locations chosen to meet with others in your household in case of separation. This guarantees that all involved know that they will be able to locate each other with ease, eliminating stress. In addition, pick a neighbor or family member who lives nearby that you can call for support in any case of emergency.

Next, identify any possible exit routes out of the city. Account for bridges and tunnels being overwhelmed by traffic, or for having to seek out another form of transportation to leave the city if you have to evacuate your home during the cleanup and restoration process following a flood.

  1. Check Your Insurance Policy

If you rent your home, renters insurance will insure the items inside your apartment. Homeowner? Make sure that flood and wind damage are included in your homeowner’s policy. In many cases, homeowners insurance neglects to include flood damage coverage, so be sure to add it to your policy to be prepared. Keep your insurance information on your phone and printed out or written in an easily accessible space, such as in your wallet, car glove box, or in your bag.

  1. Make a Go Bag

It’s exactly what it sounds like. A Go Bag is a curated collection of items that you can grab in a hurry in case of an emergency. Make sure the bag itself is sturdy, such as a backpack, and customize it to your household’s direct needs.

Examples Include:

  • Bottled Water and Nonperishable Food: Granola bars, beef jerky, trail mix are all great quick snacks to include.
  • Flashlight with batteries included.
  • List of medications you take with a brief description of why and when you take them.
  • A contact list of your family and household members, with phone numbers included.
  • First Aid Kit
  • Child, pet, and other special care items
  • Portable cell phone charger
  • Cash
  • Toiletries, such as: a toothbrush, razor, deodorant, contact solution/case, etc.
  1. Protect your home as much as possible

If you live in a flood-susceptible area, keep materials, such as sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, and lumber, on hand to help protect your home. It will help minimize damage to the structure of your building. Renting? Check with your property manager to see what they are doing to prepare for any major storm or natural disaster. If you would like more information, consult the NYC Department of Environmental Protection for resources that can help protect you.

  1. Lastly, protect your property.

One step you should take that can be done anytime, is to make an itemized list of personal property, including furnishings, clothing, and valuables. Be sure to include more items to this list as you make purchases going forward. This will help you in case any items are damaged and must be replaced via your insurance policy.

As the saying goes,

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”

In many cases floods can be either man-made or result from a natural disaster. In either way, it’s important for New Yorkers to make preparations to alleviate stress and deal with the problem as efficiently as possible. At SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island, we are able to help you create an Emergency Readiness Plan (or ERP) that is tailored to your exact home or business needs. Give us a call today at 718-979-4100 and ask for Annmarie!

How We Do Water Extraction

8/28/2020 (Permalink)

Water being extracted using our equipment An inside look at the professional water extraction tools we use in order to help prevent water damage!

What is water extraction?

Water extraction is done to remove water from a home or business after a flood, burst pipe, or storm. When large amounts of water come on to your property, it’s important to call your local SERVPRO in order to have the water extracted as soon as possible to prevent mold and further damage to your property.

What tools are used to extract the water?

Our trained technicians use pumps and vacuum units in order to remove large amounts of water from the walls, flooring, ceiling, and other surfaces in your home. These machines are so powerful, they can extract hundreds to thousands of gallons of water from these surfaces in order to dry. Here is a list of some of the tools we use:

  • Submersible Pumps
  • Industrial Vacuums (Wet/Dry)
  • Infrared Cameras (to find hidden water)
  • Moisture detectors

What are the first steps before a water extraction process takes place?

Our team will first identify the cause of the water damage, and if needed, will take steps to stop it in order to begin remediation. For example, if there is a burst pipe, our team will first stop the pipe from spouting off water before starting the extraction process. Next, our team identifies the type of water that has entered into the property. Depending on the classification, if it is contaminated or not, a professional will make sure to plan accordingly to make sure your property is safely restored. Furniture and/or other contents belonging to the property may also be moved to prevent damage or stains on the floor.

How do I know that all of the water has been extracted?

Our professionals will use pumps and vacuums to remove a majority of the water from the property. The remaining water will be removed by technicians manipulating temperature and humidity within the premises to ensure the area is fully dried. Progress is then monitored by moisture meters that give us an accurate indication of water levels.

Five Services We Offer That MAY Surprise You

8/21/2020 (Permalink)

Technicians and Customer Did you know? We offer services that go beyond emergency response to provide some routine services for your home or business!

“I didn’t know you guys did that?!?”

It’s a line I hear often. Most who are familiar with our household name, SERVPRO, don’t realize the catalogue of services we’re equipped to offer. I’m still educating my mom on what exactly SERVPRO does, besides the clients and neighbors that I speak to daily about what sets our team apart from all the rest. Aside from the rapid response time, nationwide network, and decades of expertise, I like to tell them about all of the services that are not immediately obvious to those who have heard of the SERVPRO name before.

As the #1 name in Cleanup and Restoration, to the average on-looker it seems that we are primarily an emergency service provider. Which is only half of the story. The truth is that your local SERVPRO can provide cleaning and maintenance that provides high value in one stop. I’m talking about a deep clean that will leave you speechless when you walk into your home. Or having a one-stop that takes care of cleaning your office’s air ducts each quarter, without hassle.

#5 Carpet Cleaning

SERVPRO offers a professional carpet cleaning and maintenance service that can extend the lifetime of your carpet and upholstery by a longshot. To help your carpets look in top shape, our professionals offer specialized cleaning methods that target both optimal cleaning based on type of carpet or upholstery and levels of clean for deeply soiled carpets.

  • Bonnet Cleaning / A more gentle, but effective method for short pile carpets.
  • Hot Water Extraction / A deep cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse / Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning / The most thorough cleaning method in the business.
  • Dry Cleaning / For more sensitive materials

Think of a carpet as a filter. Carpets trap dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and more. Besides frequent vacuuming, preventative maintenance includes spot removal, pilating the carpet, and using mats to limit soil getting tracked into the home. In order to prevent moderate to worse soil buildup, it’s important to regularly schedule carpet cleaning by a professional. If you think that at-home cleaning methods are just as effective, think about this. Your carpet could be causing itchy skin, athlete’s foot, asthma, and eczema. The list goes on, but you get the idea. Dirty carpets = health risks.

Our recommendation? A professional clean for your home’s carpet should be done at least annually to keep them as close to their original appearance as possible. By hiring a professional, you get access to the industrial cleaning materials that can penetrate layers of dirt that can hide behind what you see on the surface. Get rid of those stains and keep your home clean.

BOTTOM LINE: If you have carpets in your home or office, it’s time to think about the last time they were cleaned and taken care of professionally. Besides appearance, it can help prevent allergies and save you money by not having to replace your carpet regularly.

#4 Air Duct and HVAC Cleaning

Have you ever experienced bad indoor air quality? It can cause headaches, fatigue, coughing, sneezing, and dryness to your skin and respiratory system. The usual suspect is ventilation systems that are not maintained regularly.

Did you know? According to the EPA, indoor air is actually way more polluted than outdoor air. This is due to the closed environment where particles can be easily trapped and develop into toxins that linger in the air and also on surfaces.

Our teams routinely inspect heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units (HVAC). This means a regular check-up on your HVAC to keep them running clean that will A) extend the lifespan of your equipment and B) make sure you’re not breathing in dirty air and C) save money on energy costs by making sure your equipment is not overheating or leaking.

BOTTOM LINE: If you’ve never scheduled an air duct or HVAC cleaning, get it done ASAP! Waiting any longer could allow for prolonged health consequences in addition to money wasted on equipment that is not maintained optimally. Allow a SERVPRO technician to inspect and tell you the best cleaning method to make sure you’re breathing clean air and saving money on your utility bills.

#3 Drape and Blind Cleaning

Surprised? Join the club. But, SERVPRO professionals are trained at cleaning various fabrics. Care is taken to inspect fabrics to make sure that the best cleaning method is chosen, making sure that we are treating your fabrics expertly. Draperies are dry cleaned by our technicians using our state of the art equipment, and they are done inside the home!

How does it work? We use a special solvent on your draperies, then it is then put under pressure to extract the chemicals. The result? No damage to the material and brand new looking curtains and drapes!

BOTTOM LINE: We recommend cleaning your drapery approximately every two years. It’s not invasive and will keep your curtains looking brand new as well as reduce odors that may be clinging to the fabrics.

#2 Vandalism and Graffiti Cleanup

Destruction of your property can be extremely aggravating. As a native New Yorker, I see it all the time on homes, apartment buildings, and commercial spaces. Simple acts, such as breaking a window, are a gateway for water and mold damage to come in and wreak havoc on your property.

But, you may wonder what exactly can our team do to fix your issue? We can: remove graffiti from exterior walls, clean outdoor spaces (think driveways, walkways, asphalt), remove debris, and remove odors.

BOTTOM LINE: If you find graffiti on your property or find that your place has been vandalized, call our technicians. Our team will clear out the mess and make it look "Like it never even happened." We might even help you teepee their house in retaliation (just kidding!).

On Gyms Re-opening in New York City

8/13/2020 (Permalink)

Putting a Certified sticker up We are working on getting gyms CERTIFIED to help customers feel confident upon returning!

Our franchise has been happy to serve the community as we reevaluate what it means to be clean during a pandemic. And how to help transition as life moves forward. On Staten Island, many businesses have struggled to keep their lights on as certain businesses are regulated to remain closed until the Governor says otherwise. This includes all gyms and fitness centers, which have been shuttered since the lockdown began in mid-March. As part of a movement to re-open gyms in New York, there has been a suggested protocol. In addition to checking temperature and limiting capacity, there is one more measure that professionals are suggesting. It's to test gyms monthly on their hygiene, testing for the virus on windows and doors. Those gyms not meeting standards would be taught the correct cleaning procedure by experts. Here at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island, we have been offering our services to help business owners re-open safely. If gyms are to re-open soon, we are looking to help partner with owners to make sure that these places of wellness are prepared to serve their customers. Backed by over 60 years in the industry and our reputation of being the #1 name in cleanup and restoration, we are ready to assist Staten Island gyms when their doors open again. Don't wait! Call us at 718-979-4100 to book a consultation today and go over the unique cleaning & disinfecting needs of your business.

Preparing Schools to Re-Open

8/7/2020 (Permalink)

As of August 8th, every school in New York has met the criteria for re-opening this fall. Governor Andrew Cuomo has given the word that while schools may re-open, they must meet specific plans before re-opening and belong to a region where positive test rates are below 5%. There is a high level of confidence in the state capitol with Cuomo sharing that New York is “in the best situation in the country right now. If anybody can open schools, we can open schools.” Districts are expected to submit a plan for how classes will work and what their re-opening process will look like in order to be approved.

With September only three weeks away, it is imperative that schools ensure clean classrooms for their students and teachers to return to. In the wake of Coronavirus, the standards of what it means to be clean have taken on new meaning. Many are hesitant about going back into the classroom. That is where our Certified program comes in. Here at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island, we have come out with a comprehensive cleaning program that combines over 50 years of cleaning experience with our high standards and protocols. SERVPRO has created an intense cleaning program that uses practices suggested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with the professional products that are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and are shown to provide a thorough clean.

Here at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island, we are passionate about helping our community. We want to provide our talented and hardworking school staff with clean classrooms. That the only thing that children should worry about is doing well. Not if they will feel unwell if they come through school doors. As educators and administrators navigate what re-opening will look like we are here to carry out the professional cleaning that is necessary for schools to start. To learn more, call 718-979-4100 to learn more and to schedule a consultation.

Cleaning Your Outdoor Deck

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

By the end of summer, most patio decks tend to look a little rough. Even under constant vigilance and proactive cleaning, decks can accumulate dirt and debris. Although it may seem to be an intimidating chore, cleaning the deck can be done easily. Washing your deck does not have to be expensive, it just needs a thorough cleaning once a year (minimum!)

The first step is to do a quick sweep of the patio. Be sure to not only sweep away the debris but also make sure that there is nothing between the cracks. Not doing so will result in loose leaves and items to rot the deck. Once properly swept up, then you can start scrubbing the deck. You can use either soapy water or a deck cleaner solution. Another way to clean the deck is to use a power washer, especially for large areas. Once you’re finished scrubbing the deck, give it a good rinse. Your final step is to clean the deck and apply either a stain or sealer. Voila! Your deck should look good as new!

Preventing Mold After A Disaster

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

Storm Damage After a storm, it is extremely important to remove water within 48 hours in order to prevent mold and further damage.

In the aftermath of a flood or storm, like Tropical Storm Isaias, there is a high potential for mold to accumulate. There are significant health risks associated with flooding in a home. Mold is dependent on moisture in order to grow, so it is of great importance to dry your home and furniture immediately. The window is short: all items and the property itself must be completely dried within the first 24-48 hours.

Let us note that unless a first responder or a SERVPRO professional tells you that it is safe, do not re-enter the building after it has been flooded. Cleaning should also wait until after your contact your insurance company and take photos of your items. If it is safe to go inside, be sure to go with personal protective equipment.

Checking For Damage After A Storm

8/4/2020 (Permalink)

The aftermath of a large storm like Tropical Storm Isaias can be daunting. Within seconds, a storm can change everything. If your home or business is affected by storm damage, water or otherwise, it’s very important to prioritize restoration in order to minimize loss. Knowing what to expect will help bring back your normal day-to-day routine.

Once it is safe to do so, check your property for damage. It’s important to make sure that the area is safe, so refer to local news to be certain that there are no more storm hazards.

Be very careful to watch out for: broken glass, exposed nails, downed power lines, collapsed roofing, and standing water. When assessing damage, be sure to keep ample distance from downed power lines.

Important places to look immediately following a storm? Look for any damage to the outside unit. This means scanning all exterior services for damage such as splitting, cracks, chipping, and discoloration. Both windows and doors are prone to damage from being hit by debris and hurt by strong gusts of wind. In addition, be sure to locate outside appliances such as an air conditioner to be sure that it is still working properly.

It’s important to get a professional contractor in as soon as you suspect damage. Any signs of water damage could lead to the immediate and swift growth of mold in the area. Trust SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan and Southern Staten Island to take the heavyweight of the responsibility off of your back. Choose one of the most reliable names in Cleanup and Restoration to make sure that your life can get back on track--fast!

How to Prevent Fires

7/29/2020 (Permalink)

Engulfed flames Fires can be devestating. Be sure to follow these tips to protect those in your household!

Home fires can get out of control fast. After all, it only takes five minutes for a home to become engulfed in flames. Fires spread fast, with a major fire able to develop within 30 seconds. In order to prevent fires from starting, please take care to review the following information to keep you and your family safe!

Check Your Smoke Alarm

A working smoke alarm can be the difference between life and death in the case of a fire. We recommend you install a dual-sensor smoke alarm: these contain sensors that pick up on both ionization and photoelectric smoke. Test your batteries monthly and replace batteries annually. Depending on your manufacturer, you can expect to change your smoke alarm once every 8-10 years.

Stay in the Kitchen

If you are actively using heat to cook in the kitchen, be sure to supervise at all times. If you have to leave at any point, be sure to turn off the stove. Cooking is the #1 cause of house fires and can be easily prevented by being diligent.

Cut Those Wires

Any appliances that have worn or damaged cords should be replaced ASAP. Wires that are frayed can cause fires, especially if close to rugs or furniture that can spread the fire further.

Watch the Flammables

When cooking, be sure to keep flammables (such as alcohol or hand sanitizer) far away from the heat source.

Child Supervision

Never leave a child unsupervised near a stove or candles! Not even for a short period of time should children be left unattended with a source of fire.

Most house or apartment fires are easily avoidable. With some foresight, you may never have to know the damage that can accompany a fire in the home. However, we here at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island are here to help if you require help for fire restoration. Just give us a call at (718) 979-4100 and we will make it look "Like it never even happened."

Essential Tips for Moving During COVID-19

7/28/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Technician Wiping Down Surface Moving During COVID-19? Our professionals are uniquely qualified and prepared to maintain strict safety precautions.

Although most of the country is staying home right now due to COVID-19, there are many in New York City who are tasked with having to find a new house or apartment to move into. Moving to a new home is always stressful, but it can be extremely nerve-wracking when done during a pandemic. To ensure that your move is done as safely as possible, we have created an essential list of cleaning and inspection tips to help keep you and your family safe.

First Things First! Can the virus live on surfaces?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has made it clear that the virus is more likely to be spread via respiratory droplets than through contact with contaminated surfaces. From what researchers have observed, the virus can survive on surfaces for up to three days on a variety of materials. Best advice? The CDC recommends cleaning surfaces that are visibly dirty and then sanitize to rid your home of the virus and protect against spreading COVID-19.

Tip #1 Clean BEFORE Disinfecting

To differentiate between cleaning and sanitizing, it is important to understand the following. Cleaning refers to removal: of germs, dirt, and any other impurities that may be resting on household surfaces. In contrast, to disinfect is to use chemical disinfectants that can kill germs on contact. Your best shot of lowering the risk of spreading the virus is to clean all surfaces and to then use an approved disinfectant, such as Lysol Disinfecting Spray. For more approved household cleaners, please check out the official EPA list.

Tip #2 Make Sure to Leave Windows Open

According to the CDC, during times of illness, it is important to have fresh air circulation. When moving and after, be sure to keep all doors and windows open to ensure a breeze to flow throughout the home. Also, leaving doors open will lessen the contact made on high traffic surfaces such as door frames and handles during the moving process by those in your household as well as movers.

Tip #3 Don’t Forget to Check For Mold

If you are moving to an apartment or home that has been abandoned, such as during the COVID-19 outbreak, your new home may be at risk for containing mold. Reoccupying a space after a period of building inactivity leads to the risk of microbial hazards (i.e. mold). Before moving into an apartment, check all ceilings, walls, and floors for water spots, as they indicate a high potential for mold growth.  Moisture is needed for mold to grow, so be sure to also check for any leaks or spots that indicate mold growth. Areas that are most likely to contain mold are kitchens and bathrooms: be sure to inspect each cabinet and drawer as well.

Please remember that if anyone in your household has a respiratory issue, it is considered dangerous to move into any building that is suspected to have mold. If you do see any problem areas, be sure to act quickly and contact a SERVPRO professional as soon as possible to take care of your mold issue immediately.

Tip #4 Keep Clear Safety Standards with Movers

If you are utilizing a moving company to help with transporting and placing your items, be sure to make your safety standards clear. Movers should be given clear instructions on what your expectations are. This may include correctly wearing PPE, cleaning/disinfecting the truck, removing shoes before coming into a home, keeping a standard 6-feet social distance from others, being sure to minimize contact, washing hands frequently, etc. By communicating these safety standards and expectations, you will be able to minimize the risks of spreading the virus during the move-in process.

Did you know that SERVPRO can help you with your moving needs? Our trained staff can safely box and transport all household items to ensure a successful move. Our team is equipped to make sure your items arrive perfectly intact. Also, all SERVPRO technicians as well as keeping strict hygienic protocol.

Tips for Investment Properties, Are they Worth it?

6/16/2020 (Permalink)

Do I Need to Inspect My Investment Property?

As with any size property, it is important to have an inspection performed. Many owners will conceal all sorts of issues in order to secure a better selling price. Leaving you to deal with the reparation which can end up costing you more in the long run than the actual value of the property. Therefore, an inspection of the interior and exterior structure is a wise investment as it will provide you with an accurate report as to the value of the property. In turn, you will be better able to make a sound judgment with the given information to determine if it’s a property worth purchasing and if so, to negotiate a better price.

What Are Some Things to Look Out for When Purchasing a Property?

Here are some common warning signs:

  • Uneven heating and cooling in the attic could be a sign of something wrong with the insulation of the roof. As a result, get a roofer to check the roof for cracks, crevices, and other faults, while also making sure that the drainage system is running properly.
  • A musty smell combined with discoloration in humid surroundings means that there could be mold. Not only is mold potentially dangerous for human health, but it is also a sign that there is too much moisture, which can lead to a lot of materials to deteriorate or rot.
  • Bubbling paint, staining on ceilings or walls could be due to previous water damage. It is important to know if these areas have been properly mitigated as wet areas that are not properly dried may lead to potential mold growth.
  • The history of changes that have been made to an investment property can say a lot about its current condition. If the current owner is unwilling to divulge more than a bare minimum of information, that could be a bad sign that they are attempting to hide something.

Are Your Ducts in a Row?

6/11/2020 (Permalink)

Did you know, your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? Inspecting the ductwork in your facility or home should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention.

Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout a building or home.

Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may even save money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary.. calling a professional to inspect your system and ductwork to make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns is a good idea. Regular inspections can save money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke, or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process.

The professionals at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island use a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing dust and grime. The process is as follows;

  • The process begins using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ductwork to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97% of the particles in the air stream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will be either cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

This Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost-efficient.

Extension Cord Safety: What to Do & What to Avoid Doing

1/10/2020 (Permalink)

man in white suit encapsulating roof When using extension cords, prevent them from becoming potential fire hazards.

Extension cords are both a common and convenient way to bring power to electrical devices. However, when used without proper caution, they can become fire hazards and pose risks to your personal safety.

Follow these tips to help keep your home safe when using extension cords:

Selecting extension cords

  • Purchase only cords that have been approved by an independent testing laboratory.
  • For outdoor projects, use only extension cords marked for outdoor use.
  • Read the instructions (if available) for information about the cord's correct use and the amount of power it draws.
  • Select cords that are rated to handle the wattage of the devices with which they'll be used. A cord's gauge indicates its size; the smaller the number, the larger the wire and the more electrical current the cord can safely handle.
  • Consider the length you'll need, longer cords can't handle as much current as shorter cords of the same gauge.
  • Choose cords with polarized or three-prong plugs.
  • For use with larger appliances, thick, round, low-gauge extension cords are best. For smaller appliances and electronics, you can use thin or flat cords.

Using extension cords

  • Never remove an extension cord's grounding pin in order to fit it into a two-prong outlet.
  • Avoid powering multiple appliances with one cord.
  • Never use indoor extension cords outdoors.
  • Don't plug multiple cords together.
  • Don't run extension cords under rugs or furniture.
  • Never tape extension cords to floors or attach them to surfaces with staples or nails.
  • Don't bend or coil cords when they're in use.
  • Cover unused cord receptacles with childproof covers.
  • Never use extension cords that feel hot to the touch.

Caring for extension cords

  • Always store cords indoors.
  • Unplug extension cords when they're not in use.
  • Throw away damaged cords immediately.
  • Pull the plug — not the cord — when disconnecting from the outlet.

Remember, extension cords are intended to be temporary wiring solutions. If you find you're using them on a permanent basis, this can be a hazard.

Please call your leading professionals, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island if you or a loved one experience ramifications on your home at 718-979-4100!

Candle Safety is Important

1/9/2020 (Permalink)

encapsulated room Candles create the perfect ambiance, but a lit candle can easily ignite anything flammable in its presence.

Fast Facts:

  • 38% of home candle fires start in bedrooms and cause 35% of associated deaths.
  • More than 50% of all candle home fires start because the candle was too close to a a flammable item (I.E. mattresses, bedding, curtains, cabinetry, or furniture are ignited).
  • In 12% of home candle fires and in 25% of associated deaths and injuries, the household occupants were asleep when the fire occurred.
  • Unsupervised children are involved in 20% of home candle fires.
  • Having a working smoke alarm reduces one’s chances of dying in a fire by nearly 50%.
  • 11% of home fires are caused by falling asleep while a candle is lit
  • 58% of home fires started when something flammable was too close to the lit candle
  • 36% of home fires start in the bedroom

Preparedness Tips:

  • Remember that lit candles are fire. Keep them at least 12 inches from anything that can burn, such as curtains, bedding, mattresses, paper, books, flammable decorations, clothing, and upholstered furniture.
  • Never leave a room or go to sleep before blowing out all lit candles.
  • Use candle holders that are sturdy and won’t tip over easily. Candle holders that are made from a material that cannot burn, and are large enough to collect dripping wax would also be a good idea.
  • Place candles where they cannot be reached or knocked over by pets or children.
  • During an emergency, always use flashlights instead of candles as light sources.
  • Never leave a child unattended in a room with a candle. Additionally, keep all matches and lighters out of reach of children.
  • Keep all lit candles and any other open flames away from flammable liquids.

Puffback

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

soot covered bathroom Soot is one of the most dangerous forms of air pollution, if your home is affected please call SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island today at 718-979-4100

A puff back can incite when an oil burner doesn't ignite immediately causing oil fumes to build up before ignition, resulting in an explosion like the backfiring of a car.  Buildup of debris can also create an excessive explosion at ignition.  In either case, the explosion can shoot soot and debris through the furnace or boiler's exhaust system and into your home.

If you have a forced air system (a hot air system as opposed to a hydroponic, or hot water, system) the problem will likely be worse as the heating ducts can spread soot into every corner of your home, with the same efficiency that they spread heat.  A puff back can be a chronic problem, with each ignition sending forth a small amount of soot that slowly accumulates on heating vents, ceilings, carpets or baseboards, or it can be a single sudden event that sends a large amount of soot through the heating system.

What Should You Do?

It is quite amazing how much the soot can cover - it goes everywhere!  It can even force you out of your home in some cases.  This soot is not just a powder-like substance, but it is also black and sticky and will include a mixture of oil that is difficult to clean.  This dirty residue needs to be cleaned as soon as possible!  Oil-based soot is extremely difficult to remove.  In addition to the soot, a puff back causes a foul odor to permeate your home.  So, what should you do?

  • Assess the situation and the amount of damage that was done
  • Wash all affected clothing and fabrics in the house - some may require professional dry cleaning
  • Throw away all exposed food
  • Call a repairman to fix the malfunctioning oil furnace
  • Call a cleaning service to take care of the soot and chemicals

And that's where you need a puffback specialist to thoroughly clean and deodorize all affected items and SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is available 24/7/365 to assist as this is just one of our many services!

What to do when your sink is backed up!

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

sink orange water overflowing When water does the opposite and flows back up through the drain, it’s a pretty good indicator that you have a problem. But where should you start?

If your sink is backed up, there are several contributing factors that could be causing the problem.

  • Something lodged in the p-trap
  • Hair caught in and around the drain stop
  • The buildup over time of soap, lotions or grease

Clear the Drain Stop When Your Sink is Backed Up

When a sink is backed up, there are a few things to check before calling SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island.

  • Check the area around your drain stop. The least invasive method to clear the drain is to check and see if the drain stop has hair or another foreign object clogging it.

When hair or other materials start to build up in the drain stop area, it can also start accumulating other debris, making the clog worse. Clearing the drain stop, and keeping it clear, is imperative when the sink is backing up. Once cleared, run some water into the sink. If it is still backing up, then it is time to move under the sink.

Clearing the P-Trap

The next place to check when your sink is backed up is the p-trap. The p-trap is the name given to a plumbing device designed to prevent sewer gases from coming back up the drain. The bend in the pipe fills with water that forms a barrier keeping noxious gases from re-entering your home. The p-trap has a secondary purpose of trapping any items that may mistakenly fall down the drain. The device gets its name from its similar appearance to a sideways letter “P,” and you’ll find it directly below your sink’s drain.

When your sink is backed up, the p-trap is a good place to start. It’s easily accessible, and items or debris stuck in the p-trap are the most common cause of backed up water. No matter if the pipes under your sink are made of PVC or metal, the p-trap should be easy to remove by unscrewing the slip-nut joints on either end. Take care when removing the p-trap so as not to spill the water trapped in it.

Once you have it removed, check it for items lodged in it. Check it also for build-up that may be restricting the flow of water through the p-trap. Once you have it cleaned out, reconnect it and check to see if the water is flowing freely.

Buildup in the Pipes

If cleaning both the drain stop and the p-trap doesn’t resolve the problem when your sink is backed up, the problem may be deeper. It may be a buildup of soaps, lotions, grease or oil in your pipes. Any of these substances can start building up on the walls of your pipes, and once it starts it will continue to accumulate more debris until your pipes are clogged.

There are a few products intended for clearing fully clogged pipes, but there are also some home remedies that can help. If drainage is slow, bring a kettle of water with a half-cup of baking soda in it to a boil. Once boiling, pour the mixture down the drain. It will dissolve fatty acids that are constricting water flow within 10 minutes.

Due to the highly dangerous chemicals used in clog cleaners such as Drano, we don’t recommend using them to clear clogs. There are much safer and more environmentally friendly ways to fix a backed-up sink.

Is Your Sink Still Backed Up?

If you have stubborn sink drainage problems, sometimes the best answer is to call in the professionals. In the Richmond County area, your first call should be to SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island. Our team of knowledgeable and experienced plumbers can diagnose your specific issue quickly and correctly.

Storm and flood damage can leave property owner’s overwhelmed and devastated. Thankfully, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is an emergency service that is available 24 hours a day. Our crew is well prepared to deal with any size damage might have occurred on your property due to a storm.

Recently, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island was called to a home to resolve damage that was due to a storm. When our crew arrived at the home, they performed emergency services which included, setting up 4 dehumidifiers, and 8 air movers. Our crew then cut 1 access hole and ducted it to lay flat in the hallway, where most of the damage occurred.  The following day, we performed the remaining remediation in the home.

Our crew noticed a lot of water had accumulated in the ceilings of the closets, so they put 3 access holes with lay flats ducted to air movers and a dehumidifier. Then, they removed the base trim in the hallways and put another lay flat ducted to a dehumidifier, which they planned to check the following day to see the moisture level. By day 3 when we returned, the moisture levels in the bathroom had gone down significantly, but the ceilings still needed additional drying. When our crew went back a few days later to do a moisture reading, the flooring in the second hallway was still wet but the main hallway had dried.

When the damage after the storm was resolved, and we removed all our equipment, the homeowners were very satisfied with our work and appreciative that we were able to help so quickly. For all your restoration needs call us 24/7 at: (718) 979-4100.

Staten Island Restaurant Inundated with Category 3 Water Damage was Restored by SERVPRO

sewage and broom on floor This Richmond County restaurant was extremely elated that Football Sunday did not get canceled due to their sewage back up!

Your locally owned and operated SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island has a crew of highly trained professionals who are properly equipped to deal with water damage of any kind. If your home or business has been affected by water damage, our crew is available around the clock to assist you.

We recently helped a local business when they suffered a loss due to water damage. When our crew arrived at the loss, they immediately took the proper steps to asses the damage. We began the remediation process by setting up 3 dehumidifiers, and 6 air movers. Our crew also extracted all contaminated water and sanitized the affected areas. The next day, when our crew entered the property, the walls including drywall in the pump room were still saturated. Also, the trim under one of the brick walls was seeping water and the floor was saturated.

Our crew was dealing with a category 3 contamination. Category 3 water damage contains water that is grossly polluted with disease-causing bacteria, toxins and is extremely unsanitary. Water damage in this form can be caused by sewer back flow, a broken toilet bowl containing feces, and rising flood water. This type of water is referred to as black water. If not handled properly the black water can evaporate into the air and remain in the property for an extended period time, which is very unhealthy.

The SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island crew worked extremely hard to make sure this serious category 3 water damage situation was properly fixed. Not only did our crew resolve this issue, but they did it in a timely manner so that this business was able to be open for an important event they had booked.

Water damage is a serious situation, but with the right defense, you can save your property from any extra harm that may occur if this situation is not handled in a timely and proper manner. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is equipped to help you with your Category 3 water damage and restore your property back to a healthy and safe environment. Staten Island Business Scorned by Mold

green equipment cut walls Your locally owned and operated, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island has a crew of trained professionals for you & we are available 24/7 to help!

Mold can have a destructive impact on a commercial property. Mold from storms or other types of water exposure can badly damage local businesses and homes. Commercial properties are at a high risk of losing business until or while the mold issue is being resolved. Commercial Properties need a crew of highly trained professionals to remove or re-mediate mold.

Our crew is extremely familiar with dealing with mold remediation and removal. We were recently working at a commercial mold loss. When our crew arrived on site, we removed all the carpeting in two rooms that were impacted by mold. Then, we finished removing the sheet rock on all four walls of the office.

We needed to remove all the debris. Unfortunately, the mold issue had spread to three palettes near the company’s file room that was supporting several empty boxes. The bottom rows were completely contaminated, so we had disposed of them for safety purposes. The area was completely wiped down with antimicrobial, to get rid of any harmful toxins that could have spread. Our crew then placed additional drying equipment by the conveyor belts of the office and stairwell in the back end of the warehouse.

In the days following, our crew began removing the screws from the frame holding the sheet rock and HEPA vacuumed all debris. The area was sprayed with a second coat of antimicrobial. The floors in one of the property’s storage room and the main office were removed. The room was HEPA vacuumed and wiped down with antimicrobial, this was necessary to kill the spread of bacteria and viruses that. We manipulated the filing cabinets to provide the property’s workers with accessibility to their contents. The filing cabinets were thoroughly wiped down with antimicrobial. All affected contents, including two desks were photographed for insurance purposes and then disposed.

SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is fully prepared with a qualified crew and the right materials to remove a commercial property’s mold infestation of any size. We can respond quickly with 24 hours, around the clock services to get your business back up and running in no time. Call us at (718) 979-4100.

Recently, SERVPRO of Sothern Staten Island was able to help a local hotel, when a sprinkler system was activated on the 5th floor of the building, leading to water damage. Our crew responded to their call immediately. We began to assess the extent of the damage and returned in the days following to continue the scope of the work.

Our SERVPRO crew arrived on sight and began the extraction and cleaning of the affected areas. First, we removed the damaged area rugs from under the beds and submitted them for appraisal. Base-molding was removed from wet sheet rock walls in the effected rooms and corridors. Cavity holes were then drilled to begin the proper drying process.  The 5th Floor carpet was removed and the sub floor (concrete) was treated with antimicrobial. The antimicrobial was utilized to destroy or suppress bacteria, viruses, and fungi that the water damage caused. Our crew also had to remove the 4th floor carpet. We cut 1x1 access holes in the ceiling corridor to allow air flow in the ceiling cavity. For proper drying, we let the equipment run for 3 days.

Our crew cleaned and deodorized both the 4th and 5th floor. We used dehumidifiers, air movers and scrubbers to properly clean and remove the water. Our SERVPRO crew was able to take care of the water damage in an appropriate and professional way while also being mindful of the occupants in the hotel.

How SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island Handles Water Damage

10/22/2019 (Permalink)

water on floor Water Damaging the Floor and Contents

Unfortunately, water damage and flooding are extremely common in basements. New York basements are especially vulnerable to flooding from burst pipes, rain, and sewage leakages. Your local, independently owned and operated SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island is an expert in providing emergency services.

There are many factors such as: when the loss occurred as opposed to when it is reported to us, what caused the loss, when the cause will be repaired, the extent of the damage, etc. that contribute to the work that will need to take place to restore the property back to its original state.

SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island encourages customers with water cleanup to contact us as soon as possible, so we can respond with 24- hour emergency service. Sometimes customers contact us after an issue arises while they are away. In this instance, a customer called us upon returning home from a vacation to a water heater that had burst. Upon her return home we came to perform EMS and assess the damage and contamination that occurred.

Our crew placed the necessary equipment in the basement to handle the loss. Water extractors, dehumidifiers, and air movers to remove water were quickly deployed, and we also removed base molding.  While going through the basement our crew discovered a lot of content. We took an inventory of all the content, then we placed a 20-yard dumpster out in front of the street to dispose of all damaged property. All removed and damaged belongings were accounted for by insurers.

Containment needed to be set up on the door to the basement. Then, we assessed the customer’s vents to see if they were affected. Unfortunately, the customer’s vents were affected. We scheduled an appointment with our duct cleaning/ HVAC division, then covered the vents in the basement. Our crew had to remove the carpet and padding, while the content is being manipulated. Two-foot flood cuts were made all around the room and base trim was removed. Additionally, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island performed any general cleaning that was necessary to restore the basement to its original state and to make sure the environment is safe and healthy.

If a water loss incident of any size has occurred, SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island has a crew of trained professionals and equipment that is available to help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. Contact us at (718) 979-4100.

Maintenance tips to prepare your property for the winter

7/15/2019 (Permalink)

Preparing for the cold, along with the potential winter storms that come with it is important for a few reasons: its both cost and time effective, to name a few. A handful of tips that may help prevent unwanted waste of time and money can be found below.

1. Clearing all the drains on the property of debris.

After The Fire Is Out

6/28/2019 (Permalink)

Once in a while we are struck by calamities such as fires. Fire can be caused by:

  • Human errors such as forgotten candles
  • Electrical faults
  • Cigarettes
  • Home appliances
  • Gases and chemicals
  • Heating
  • Arson

Even with smoke detectors in place, fire can raze down an entire building or parts of the building leaving considerable damage in its trail. Long after the firefighters have left the question on most house owners minds is what next? The damage is both financially and emotionally draining. Loss of personal property and disruption of regular life is frustrating. It may involve moving out to a new home while the damages are repaired and for business, it leads to an immediate loss of income.

Restoration

Once you have met with your insurance provider, you then seek a firm that specializes in restoration. You need a company that has an excellent reputation and will help rebuild your house. Not everybody that promises to bring back your premises' lost glory will deliver. When contracting a restoration company in Manhattan consider the following:

Speed

Restoration should be carried out as quickly as possible. You want to restore normalcy within the shortest time possible. If it's business, it should be up and running within a relatively short period. You don't want to work with someone that will drag the repairs for months. Speed does not mean poor maintenance. It is possible to achieve good quality renovation in a short period using the right staff and equipment.

Professional

Ensure the firm you select has experienced and qualified staff. The staff should also be trustworthy; your belongings should remain safe even as you open your home or business to 'strangers.' They should possess modern and efficient equipment to be used in renovation and cleaning. State of the art equipment ensures a thorough cleaning and does not leave any traces behind. The staff should show empathy to their clients as they are going through a rough time.

The smoke smell remains in carpets, upholstered furniture and clothing unless it is eliminated before the cleaning process. We use high-quality additives and chemicals to help break the molecules and get rid of the smell.

Cleaning the room

After deodorizing, it is time to eliminate the smoke spots by doing a thorough cleaning of the walls, carpets and the washable clothes ensuring that they are all left immaculately clean.

How to Limit Mold in your Properites

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

Preventing mold, whether is be in your home or in your business, is always a step in the right direction. The trick is, there is one major key to preventing mold in your property: having proper moisture control. Below are a few simple tips:

1. Unfortunately for you, mold cant be avoided completely. However, you can limit its presence with getting rid of anything damp in your home and making sure temperature control is constant and equal throughout the house. If it costs money upfront to do a little remediation such as waterproofing, its most likely worth it in the long run.

2. Closely monitor the humidity levels in your home or office, especially in the summer. Changes in temperature throughout the days and weeks is a primary catalyst for the formation of mold. Humidity is recommended to be a certain level by the EPA. They suggest that it should be in between the range of 30-60% in any room. Falling within these parameters will prove to be beneficial.

3. Avoid external sources of water that may be sneakily placed around your property. Avoid any place where water can collect (especially rain water near the sides of your property) and remove or alter any area that may cause an issue like this.

Use these helpful tips to prevent the stress of finding unwanted mold!

A building’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC) and subsequent ducts are the key component to air quality. HVAC and duct cleanliness have a direct impact on the functionality of the equipment as well, a clean system ought to function at maximum capacity. If your system is clean and properly functioning, it should provide you with positive indoor air quality and a lower monthly cost of running your HVAC system.

You can keep your commercial ducts in a row by changing the filters within the system regularly - it is recommended to change them every 90 days. Check any connections for damage. If you can see any damage to the connections, wires, or motors then the damage needs to be repaired immediately in order to keep your HVAC system safe and properly functioning.

You should annually inspect your HVAC system and ducts to see if there is visible mold, a surplus of dust and/or debris, and rodent infestation. Signs of a rodent infestation would be feces and odors in your system or noises occurring in the system. If your HVAC system and ducts have any of these signs then it is time to call in the professionals. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island has highly trained cleanup and restoration technicians that will provide you with a free estimate for your HVAC system and ductwork.

If you notice that your system isn’t working as well as it normally does such as an increase in electrical bill costs or the system is running more often than usual then it may be time for a cleaning as well. If your system is regularly providing you with maintenance issues such as improper temperature or humidity issues, these may be signs or symptoms of your HVAC system needing a checkup.

6/10/2019 (Permalink)

Why Do You Need to Inspect Your Investment Properties?

Most investment properties are big, meaning that it is possible for their current owners to conceal all sorts of faults in order to secure a better selling price. As a result, if you are interested in a particular investment property, you should inspect both its interior and its exterior to make sure that it is worth its price.

What Are Some Common Warning Signs?

Here are some common warning signs:

  • Uneven heating and cooling in the attic could be a sign of something wrong with the insulation of the roof. As a result, get a roofer to check the roof for cracks, crevices, and other faults, while also making sure that the drainage system is running properly.
  • A musty smell combined with discoloration in humid surroundings mean that there could be mold. Not only is mold potentially dangerous for human health, but it is also a sign that there is too much moisture, which can cause a lot of materials to deteriorate.
  • The history of changes that have been made to an investment property can say a lot about its current condition. If the current owner is unwilling to divulge more than a bare minimum of information, that could be an bad sign that they are attempting to hide something.

Inspection of Your Home

If you call them in after a flood, they will start by visiting your home, inspecting the flooded area, and putting in place a flood remediation plan. Homeowners are generally aware that excess water should be removed from a flooded home, but often find themselves unable to locate other problems that are present after flooding. This is often because a significant portion of the damage that results from a flood can be hidden behind your walls and not noticeable to the naked eye. This danger is not immediate in nature and grows over time, and having it remedied quickly can be of significant benefit.

Once the damaged area has been surveyed, the flood remediation plan can be put in place.

Water Remediation Services

Water can cause all sorts of problems in your home. Once it gets behind walls it can contribute to the growth of mold. In the case of salt water flooding, the salt water can cause electrical fires and contribute to other serious home problems. Further, it can contribute to structural problems in your home.

SERVPRO works to address these problems by getting rid of water quickly using high quality fans and dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the flooded area. They apply anti-fungal treatments to the area which helps to inhibit mold growth and other addressable problems. They then will identify any structural problems that are identified through this flood remediation process and provide you with recommendation regarding future services to address the problems. In the meantime, they will often provide you with some basic band-aid like solutions for major problems that are being identified in the process.

Causes of fire damage in homes and how to prevent it

12/13/2017 (Permalink)

A homeowner's worst enemy is fire because it can burn your hard earned investment to the ground and even cause deaths to you or your family. Fire is a vicious enemy who can not only burn your property but can also cause other problems such as water damage, break windows because of pressure as well as damage the roof hence expose your home to greater damage. All these dangers and losses that can be caused by fire call for you as the homeowner to think of ways to prevent fires and put them into action.

The first step you should take towards preventing fire outbreaks at homes is taking safety precautions. One way you can do this is by installing a fire alarm in your house and ensuring that it is functional at all times. The other way is by buying a fire extinguisher and placing it in an accessible and safe place. This equipment can help you mitigate the damage that fire can cause when it occurs. You can also consider installing a fire door in your kitchen to slow down the rate of burning as you look for alternative means of putting out the fire.

The next step is to ensure that you follow manufacturer's procedures whenever you are handling combustible equipment. These include equipment and items such as lighting candles, cooking equipment and electrical appliances. For example, at no time should a hob used to turn off gas be left on because once the gas fills the house it will only take a spark to ignite and cause fire.

Another thing to consider is the design of your house which should not catalyze a fire outbreak. Therefore, care should be taken to see that bright lights are not installed too close to the loft installations, flammable items should not be placed above the stove and dry grass growing around the house should be trimmed among other measures.

The possible causes of fires at our homes are kitchen fires, lightning, children playing with fire, electrical fires, and smoking. Kitchen fires can be prevented by being careful when cooking. For instance, you should wear fitting clothes when cooking and open the damper before lighting wood fire, wet ashes before throwing them away and watch out for an awful smell. Electrical fires can be avoided by avoiding overloading an outlet with appliances and repairing outlets and wiring that needs repairs. Fires caused by children can be prevented by educating children on the dangers of fire and smoke fires can easily be avoided if the smoker avoids smoking when inside the house and then ensuring that they dispose of the cigarette butt well once they are done smoking.

At SERVPRO, we have experience in dealing with fire damage and we have been providing our services to residents of Manhattan, New York City. Call us today if you had a fire at your home and are wondering how to handle the damage it caused.

Our team is experienced, and we have all the tools required for a thorough inspection. They will conduct the inspection carefully to determine the severity of the fire and where smoke and soot has settled. It is the first step to decide which action to take.

Smoke and soot removal

We then start the cleaning job to eliminate all the soot and smoke residues and checking the missing items that need replacement.

Cleaning soot and removing smoke is not an easy thing to do by yourself and that is why you need professionals like us. We remove the entire smoke residue from the walls, floor, windows, and ceiling.

Drying

After cleaning, we perform a drying action to remove all the water flooded when attempting to fight the fire.

Sanitization

This also involves the removal of smoke odor through fogging equipment and scrubbers.

Restoration

This is the last step which includes repairs and replacement. It ensures that everything is brought back to the way it was before the fire occurrence.

Mold Management and Removal

8/21/2017 (Permalink)

Choosing a mold damage management company can be stressful as you are not sure which contractor to trust. We are unique since we provide our clients in New York City and Manhattan with quality solutions to mold damage problems.

Our staff is experienced and has been in this field for decades, and this allows them to come up with unique methods of mold elimination.

The presence of water in your building either at your home or business can lead to excessive growth of mold. They can quickly spread to basements, bathrooms, walls and any other areas prone to moisture contact.

Other than property destruction, mold can affect the overall health of the buildings' inhabitants. Some of the effects of mold include;

  • Nasal stuffiness
  • Eye irritation
  • Skin irritation
  • Wheezing
  • Fever
  • Shortness of breath

Also, the growth of mold presents a threat to your property value which could cost you a lot in maintenance expenses.

To avoid such things from happening to you, let us help you to get rid of mold and any other threatening signs completely. To achieve this, we;

Identify and remove the cause of mold

This is always the first because if we do not get rid of the roots, mold will keep coming back. The mistake that most homeowners make is thinking that they can get rid of mold by just cleaning and disinfecting the areas. Some use homemade bleach to wipe the surfaces forgetting that they leave behind the bio-smile causing the mold.

Mold removal

After collecting the causes, we start the remediation process. We eliminate mold in all affected areas like the bathroom using the help of our experts and quality products ensuring that your home is left in a pleasant state.

Mold removal is not an easy task as many individuals think. If done improperly you will keep seeing mold appearing in your home despite the repeated cleaning attempts. Bleach and other household cleaning products do not kill mold. The best remedy is eliminating all the moisture as it is the catalyst for mold growth. Therefore, homeowners should not attempt to remove mold if the affected area is over 10 square feet. It is best if done by a certified mold management professional and that why we are here to help all the New York City and Manhattan dwellers. Contact us today to book an appointment.

Creating Fire Safety Exit Plan for Your Home

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

It is imperative for you and your family to have a home escape plan in case of a fire. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island created step by step instructions for a fire safety exit strategy.

  1. Using a floor plan (if you do not have one, you can easily draw a simple one) pick a primary exit from each room of your home. Your primary exit would be the quickest exit. You should also pick an alternative exit from each room, such as a window, if the primary exits are blocked in an emergency.
  2. Any rooms that are not on the ground floor should have a fire escape ladder. They can easily be purchased online or at your local hardware store.
  3. Write down your exit plan and give copies to each member of your family, make sure to do a practice session with any young family members.
  4. You and your family should also do an exit plan practice session in the dark as a fire can happen at any time and frequently knocks out the power.
  5. When exiting your home during a fire it is important to remember the following:
    1. A closed door that is emitting heat should not be opened, if you feel any heat you should leave using your alternative exit.
    2. If the door is closed and not emitting heat, you should open it slowly with your shoulder pushed against the door in case flames and/or smoke are on the other side.
    3. If there is smoke along the exit route, you and your family should crawl on the floor with mouths and noses covered to avoid smoke inhalation.
  6. Pick a designated meeting spot outside of your home. For example, the end of your driveway or in front of a neighbor's house.
  7. Pick a neighbor, ideally one you are friendly with, and let them know that in case of an emergency you will be coming to their house to call 911. This may seem obsolete because of cells phones however during a fire the most important thing is to exit your home ASAP and you can easily not have access to your phone or forget it.
  8. You and your family must wait outside your home until emergency services has deemed your home safe for reentry.
  9. If there is any damage from fire, water, and/or smoke - call SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island 718-979-4100 for your Cleanup & Restoration and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

How to Protect your Basement from Mold

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

Mold grows rapidly in dark and damp places, making your basement a prime environment from mold growth if not properly maintained. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island has created a simple step by step list to keep your basement mold free! It is important to be proactive in keeping your basement free from mold because once it is present, it can become a big problem.

  1. Check the humidity level in your basement. A hygrometer is an inexpensive tool used to check humidity levels and can be purchased online or at your local hardware store. If the humidity level is above 45% then you need to reduce the humidity level in your basement.
  2. Put a dehumidifier in your basement. This is a great tool to have in your home regardless of a high humidity level because the humidity of your basement can change due to the weather outside. High quality dehumidifiers check the level of humidity in the room and adjust accordingly.
  3. Keep the clutter in your basement to a minimum. Items that are capable of storing moisture such as books or clothing can become a source for mold growth. Make sure to store these items in moisture resistant containers such as plastic bins and to store them slightly away from walls and off of the ground.
  4. Keep the water away from your basement. Make sure your gutters aim away from your home.
  5. Clean up any spills that occur in your basement immediately.
  6. Protect your pipes. In the winter months, pipes are prone to freezing and then bursting when temperatures rise. If your pipes are insulated this will prevent possible bursting and reduce condensation from the pipes which provides additional protection from high humidity levels in your basement.
  7. If your washing machine and dryer are in the basement make sure that all connections are properly sealed and exhausting to the outdoors.
  8. During the warmer months, air out your basement. Open the doors and windows while using a fan in the basement to circulate in fresh air.

SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island knows that home maintenance can be a big task so we’ve created this simple list to help you upkeep your home quickly and effectively. If you think your basement has mold growth, call SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island 718-979-4100 for a free estimate today!

Frigid temperatures are just around the corner

12/16/2016 (Permalink)

The cold winter season is usually characterized by snow, ice, and low temperatures. Besides these, the cold weather can also cause many problems in your home such as frozen pipes in the basements and it can also become a home for small animals escaping from the harsh climate. The damaged pipes can also cause structural damage, provide the perfect conditions for mold to grow and cause flooding.

Research shows that a pipe does not break due to the formation of ice inside it or the expansion of ice against its wall. The actual cause of the breakage is the continuous freezing and expansion that takes place inside the pipe after there has been a complete ice blockage which results in pressure increasing between the ice blockage and the closed faucet. In fact, pipes break where there has been barely any ice formation.

The pipes that mostly freeze are swimming pool lines, sprinkler lines, outdoor faucet, water supply line in places like the basement, garages, crawl places and attics. Therefore, homeowners should take certain precautions to prevent this from happening.

To prevent pipes from breaking, you will need to do the following;

• Leave the cabinet doors under sinks open
• Insulate pipes with plastic, newspaper or insulation
• Make your home winter-ready by covering the windows using plastic or installing storm windows, weather stripping and caulking windows and doors, and insulating walls and attics
• Ensure that your thermostat reads the same temperature during the day and night
• Avoid closing the faucets tightly during winter; leave them dripping to prevent freezing

If your pipes freeze after taking all these precautions, do not panic. Seek the assistance of a professional. If you live in Southern Staten Island, call us and let us restore your pipes. We offer reliable restoration and cleaning service to the residents of Southern Staten Island. We are a local company hence you can be sure that we know the area well and will arrive promptly to address the problem before it causes more damage to your home. How Smoke and Soot from Fires Can Damage Your Home

9/19/2016 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Midtown Manhattan in New York City, we bring exquisite cleaning and restoration services to both residential and commercial clients. Our restoration technicians are highly trained and are equipped with advanced equipment. We also provide round the clock emergency services to your convenience.

After the Rain: Restoring your valuables

9/4/2016 (Permalink)

Restoring your valuables

The chances of restoring your furniture after a flood highly depend on the magnitude of the flooding and the furniture type. But obviously, less porous solid wood furniture has a higher chance of being salvaged than the particle board or upholstered furniture. Even though restoring water ruined valuables seems to be an easier task, it is better you leave it to professionals. Immediately after a flood, consider doing the following:

- Act fast but also respect all the contents in it. Damages on your valuables will be severe if you allow more time to pass after the flood.

- Move salvageable furniture to drier areas to start the drying process.

- Remember to take some photos of the damaged items. These photos may help you when filing an insurance claim. When deciding on the furniture pieces to restore you have to consider the damage severity, the sentimental value and the total cost of restoration.

- You can also salvage your upholstered furniture if it came into contact with a smaller amount of clean water – during the flooding. Remember to separate your upholstery fabrics and the other colored items – this will prevent bleeding. Never dry it as this may lead to mildew or mold growth.

Always protect your home from floods. But if anything unexpected happens, our technicians are always ready to help customers with valuables restoration. You can contact us at any time particularly if you are looking for the best services.

Infrared Water Damage Image

Identifying the source of water damage at home or in your commercial building could prove to be a challenging task. This is because you only see the signs of a problem when they manifest themselves through ceiling, wall, floor or other parts of the building. However, our company is there to assist you in finding the source of the problem and helping you fix it. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island makes the whole process hustle free where we use advanced technology like infrared detectors to identify the source of your water leakage.

How it works

The infrared detectors are tools with cameras that take rainbow-colored images. The images do not show the exact source of the problem. However, they show temperature differential and thermal patterns. The images help identify cold spots by the of presence of uneven insulation and moisture. Water spots in the images are always seen as dark blue spots since evaporative moisture cools the surface of nearby materials. Only a profession can be able to read the images and interpret them for you and at SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island we have just the right team to do so. Give as a call for any assistance in finding the source, cleaning and restoring your house. Save your house and on cost with us.

The Pro's of Carpeting Your Business

7/27/2016 (Permalink)

When it comes to your business, even the small details count such as the flooring that you choose for your physical location. It's all about making a good impression on your customer and carpeting can do just that while being budget friendly and boasting several other advantages.

Easy to Take Care Of

You don't have to worry about only using certain cleaners and preventing scratches and damage like you do with hardwood, vinyl, or tile. Carpet just needs a routine vacuum and spot clean should there be any spills. For more challenging spills that stain, you can get a professional to clean the carpet and make it look new again.

Safety

Carpeting is safer for both your customers and your employees. If someone were to fall, the carpet will pad their fall. Carpet is also more comfortable to stand on all day, so your employees won't battle as much fatigue and soreness at the end of the day.

Many Option in Your Budget

Carpet is affordable and comes in many different blends and colors so that you can choose something that looks nice and fits your budget.

These are just some of the reasons why you should consider carpeting for your business. It's truly a smart investment.

Expecting the Unexpected

7/24/2016 (Permalink)

Whichever the season, whether it's winter or summer, the weather conditions and temperature outside your home will not match the inside. Unless your home is properly prepped and sealed, the outside weather conditions can have a big impact on your home. Floods, in particular, can occur at anytime and anywhere. To ensure that you and your home are protected, here are some weather-proofing tips from SERVPRO of Staten Island.

Weatherproof Windows and Doors

Seal all gaps around windows and doors. Not only will this keep flood water out, but it can cut your heating and cooling bill significantly by maintaining a consistent internal temperature. Check for gaps that are larger than 1/8-inch, and consider sealing those.

Check Gutters

Incorrectly angled or clogged gutters can catch rainwater and other debris such as leaves and twigs, causing overflow. Water can then be redirected and leak into your home, causing wall damage in addition to interior damage of your home. Check for proper gutter installation and alignment, and frequently clean out your gutters to prevent overflow.

Inspect the Attic

The attic is usually the last place many homeowners will check for any signs of damage or need for repairs. If left unfixed, this can lead to water leakage during rainy days. During the day, check for streams of light entering the attic through the roof.

Weather proofing and preparing for a flood can avoid the need to elevate, demolish or relocate homes. Taking the proper precautions, making the right repairs and being prepared for the unexpected is a cost-effect approach and solution. It can save you money, time and the headache of dealing with a larger disaster or damage on your home.

The Natural Wear and tear of Upholstery

7/20/2016 (Permalink)

From your leather sofa to your favorite fabric lounge chair, keeping your upholstery clean can help extend the life of your upholstery furniture, which goes through natural wear and tear. SERVPRO of Southern Staten Island can identify different types of fabric and the best cleaning method for each.

Promote a Healthy Home or Office Environment

Upholstery experiences a lot of daily soiling, collection of dust and wear and tear. Think about how much dust comes in and out of your home or office through open doors and windows and accumulates on your furniture. Cleaning your upholstery on a regular basis not only freshens the material and furniture, but it can also help allergy sufferers by eliminating all of that dust, dirt and allergens. Bacteria and germs can also be removed from furniture on a regular cleaning basis, resulting in a clean and fresh upholstery furniture.

Freshen Fabric

When your upholstery is clean, it create an inviting and fresh environment. Over time, the upholstery fabric can soak up whatever smell is in the air or placed upon the furniture. For example, if you're cooking fish, that smell will linger in the home and settle onto your upholstery. Perfume can get rubbed onto upholstery off of another person.

Save Money in the Long Run

Upholstery furniture can take a beating when used on a regular basis. Not only will cleaning eliminate dirt, dust and bacteria, but it can also help faded furniture and even restore color to a "like new" condition. In the long-run, this will save you from having to purchase another piece of furniture to replace a dirty, faded one.

What Is Mold?

5/27/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know there are different types of mold?

Molds are microscopic organisms that live on plant or animal matter. They aid in the break down of dead material and recycle nutrients in the environment. Present virtually everywhere, they can be found growing on organic material such as soil, foods, and plant matter. In order to reproduce, molds produce spores, which spread through air, water, or by insects. These spores act like seeds and can form new mold growth if the conditions are right.

Why does mold grow?

Mold will grow and multiply under the right conditions, needing only sufficient moisture (e.g., in the form of very high humidity, condensation, or water from a leaking pipe, etc.), and organic material (e.g., ceiling tile, drywall, paper, or natural fiber carpet padding).

Can mold become a problem in my home?

Mold growth may occur in your home if there is sufficient moisture because mold spores are everywhere. Be on the lookout for these common sources of moisture:

*Flooding

*Roof leaks

*Plumbing leaks, drainage problems

*Damp basements and crawl spaces

*Steam from the bathroom or kitchen

*Condensation resulting from poor or improper insulation or ventilation

*Humidifiers

*Wet clothes drying inside the home or a clothes dryer venting indoors

*Poor or improper ventilation of combustion appliances

*Indications of a moisture problem may include discoloration of the ceiling or walls, warping of the floor, or condensation on the walls or windows. The key to preventing mold growth is to control all moisture problems.
