January, February and March are peak months for home fire deaths.  During winter months, heating equipment is the leading cause of home fires.  About two-thirds of home heating fire deaths are caused by portable or fixed space heaters.  Candles are responsible for a growing percentage of home fires. 

Test smoke alarms at least once a month.  Two of every five fires occur because of space heaters.  Do not place space heaters or other heating equipment near flammable materials, such as furniture, clothing, mattresses or bedding.  If you own a wood stove, always keep the doors closed.  If you own a fireplace, use a screen, and have your chimney inspected regularly.  A buildup of creosote can quickly lead to a deadly fire.
